Air quality has become a household word. In the last 5 years air quality has been in the news and health awareness articles more than ever before. Why??  For one reason the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates air pollutants may be two to five times and, occasionally, more than 100 times higher than outdoor levels.

Further, the EPA estimates that poor indoor air quality costs Americans tens of billions of dollars each year in direct medical expenses and lost productivity.  According to The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, 50 million Americans suffer from allergy-related problems.

Many of us have become more allergic as time goes on.  Some folks enjoyed 20 - 30 or more years being allergy free.  But as we get older our body can not handle all the chemicals, pollens, dust and microbial contamination that is so prevalent today.  Older homes can exchange the air in homes many times per day causing high utility bills as well as infiltration of increased amounts of contaminants.  Newer homes were built very air tight which locks in all the chemicals off-gassing such as paints, stains, carpets, pressed board and cleaning agents.

Can a high efficiency filter help??    Filtration can help with dust, pollen and spores but more may be needed.   Some have purchased so called High Efficiency filters only to find that that their homes have become even more dusty and even suffered worse than before. Ducting over 10 years old often have leaky connections in the attic or crawl space due to sealants that fail such as duct tape, then when a better filter is installed, leaks become worse, drawing in dirty contaminated air. Beware that  if you attempt to seal your ducting yourself you can cause other ramifications such as carbon monoxide poisoning.  You should have a professional test your home with an Infiltrometer or Duct Blaster to determine how much leakage you have and where it's leaking so it can be repaired properly.

Dirty ducting can be identified by dirty grills, dirty ceiling and walls adjacent to grills and by visual inspection. Dirt in ducting cause Heating and Air Conditioning Systems to use more power and can cause increased health problems.  Dirt in ducting can cause mold to grow in the dark, damp environment, causing allergies to flare and respiratory ailments.

Inspections are free.. Don't you deserve to know whether or not your home environment could be healthier.
