Insulation is the only thing separates you and your family from the elements. Even though your home may have wood or plaster walls, they are no barrier for the heat and cold. Walls in homes prior to 1975 rarely were insulated allowing the heat to enter the home in the Summer and Heat to Escape in the Winter.
Existing Walls can be insulated in most cases by drilling a series of holes in the exterior of the homes walls and pumping it in. Wall insulation not only will reduce your heating and cooling costs but, reduce sound transfer, condensation and mold.
Attics can get up to 180° in the Summer, and since heat is always migrating to where it is cool, your comfortable environment. Homes constructed prior to 1965 rarely had more than 1" of Redwood shavings (kindling) for insulation and homes between 1965 and 1980 usually have 3" or less.
New homes today receive between 81/2" and 11" for maximum energy efficiency and comfort. Attic insulation is probably the least expensive most effective improvement you can make to your home and the utility company typically will offer rebates for this work.
