Tip of the Week
WINTER IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER! HAVE YOU TUNED UP YOUR FURNACE THIS YEAR?
Tips on how to check your comfort system
If you have a separate furnace go to it while it is running and see if you notice any air leaking from the furnace or duct work. Any leaks should be sealed, but it should be done by a qualified service technician. Warning, sealing leaks on your furnace or ducting can cause other problems such as carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not store flammable materials such as folding tables, vacuum cleaners or air filters in the furnace closet. Use a soapy water solution to check gas fittings for leaks. If bubbles multiply when you are testing the piping, you have a leak and you should turn off the gas until you have the repairs completed.
Check your air conditioning unit for weeds growing into the unit or bent fins on the cooling coil. Remove the weeds and carefully straighten any fins you can with a butter knife or small screw driver. Washing the coil with only a low pressure water hose can improve performance and cut utility costs. Do not use a powerful hose attachment.
In cooling mode the temperature of air coming out of the vents during operation should be 18 - 20 degree's cooler than the air going into the intake or return vent. As an air conditioning unit nears it's exhaustion, the difference will diminish. The air coming out of the vents while the heater is running should be around 100 degree's or higher.
A properly sized and adjusted furnace and air conditioner should not cycle off and back on in less than 10-15 minutes except in extreme weather conditions (100+ days).
Frequently asked questions BACK TO TOP
How do I know when it's time to replace my furnace or air conditioner?
The best time to replace your system is when the weather is mild or when Utility incentives are available. Replacing a system during peak seasons is always more expensive and usually you'll have to wait in line. Comfort systems typically last 15 - 20 years before major repairs set in. When faced with a repair of $250 or more, investing money in repairs on a unit that old is money lost. These units typically will end up costing a lot more in repairs before you know it, and then after spending substantial amounts to keep it going you'll find some parts are obsolete requiring replacement anyway. Ask your technicians professional opinion, A repair today could be wasted because you may still need replacement tomorrow.
Another fact to consider is that money wasted to inefficiency of older systems can be recuperated by installing a new high efficiency system. Many folks tell me they can not afford to replace their system. We find you can't afford not to replace it. We have financing available where the payment can often times be offset by the utility savings. Many folks can save $50, $100 and more per month.
How can I protect my family from Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that can make you very sick and even kill you or your family. Every year hundreds of people die from carbon monoxide poisoning. The first step is to install a Quality carbon monoxide detector in your home, preferably one that will turn off your heating system. Carbon monoxide detectors come in a variety of price ranges and styles. Detectors can be purchased at the local hardware or discount store for as little at $15 or sometimes less. The drawback to these type of detectors are, 1) Elements that need replacing periodically that usually cost more than the detector, 2) Often they can falsely alarm from perfumes, carpet cleaners and sometimes cleaning chemicals, and usually are too sensitive. A Quality detector that will keep your family safe and alive should run around $75 - $150 depending on features. Doesn't it make sense to invest in a lifetime product that you won't have to worry when the element needs replacing and won't scare your family to death because of a fluke.
The best place to install a Carbon Monoxide Detector is in the bedroom approximately the same height as your pillow. When your sleeping you tend to breathe deeper and you stay in one area for a longer period of time. Also the opening and closing doors in other areas of the home will dilute Carbon Monoxide and will prevent the detector from doing it's job.
Also be careful not to cover combustion air vents in the furnace or water heater closet. These vents bring fresh air in for the appliance to operate properly. They are typically located near the floor and ceiling of the room. Ask your service Technician to test your appliances for you and check for proper combustion air.
